| a teacher i'll never forget |

usually i find reading posts about someone's loved one passing awkward. it's hard for me to empathize sometimes. how can i feel sad for someone i don't know and know nothing about? the pessimist inside me believe that people throw around half-assed condolences all the time and that's why i had second thoughts if i should do this or not. i thought, why bore whoever bothered to even read this post with ranting about a person they have never even met? they'll just probably feel obliged to leave a courteous comment but not really mean it. but then i realized it doesn't even matter if no one reads this. i'm writing this because i owe at least this much to this person who has been a part of my life.
mrs. leonardo was my (and the rest of my sibs') music theory teacher. her first name escapes me at the moment but fuck, i probably don't know it all. i'm not even entirely sure if it's really mrs or just ms. so let me explain a bit. i started taking formal piano lessons at miriam music center since i was four. in our music school, if you're under the royal school of music program, you'll have two lessons a week. one would be a practical lesson with your instrument teacher, and the other would be the theory lesson with mrs. leonardo. what she teaches is basically what we've all learned in grade school and high school music class about the clefs, notes, scales, time signatures, key signatures, composers, etc. etc. and then some more. i can't remember what age i actually started with her, probably a year or two after i started so that would make me 6. Since i stopped going to theory class sometime during high school, she's been my teacher for at least a decade. i stopped piano 1st year college. theory classes a couple of years before that since they weren't as necessary anymore and plus, mrs. leonardo didn't teach it anymore.
10 years with one teacher. you just don't have something like that in regular school. when i started theory classes, all i had to do was practice drawing the clefs and name the notes. before she stopped teaching me, i was already writing short melodies "free-hand" (no piano or anything, just in my head) which she would then play and check if it made any sense (actually, they all sounded pretty good) and identifying periods and possible composers of obscure passages she would play.
every school year, the schedule of our class changes depending on the schedule of regular school. there was a time that i would go on saturday mornings, but mostly it was right after class. still in my ateneo uniform i would enter the dangerous land known as an exclusive girls school. theory class wasn't one on one but since i'm an outsider, there would be times when i was the only student there. i never got why some students were afraid of her. she's actually a very nice person. she would kid around with me a lot. she would tell me that i was genius and that i had a good ear. one time, she caught me and my little sister fighting over the eraser and not really in a preachy or lecture-y way, she told me i shouldn't do that. that how i was the brother and all that. she was always very confident in me and would always say that i can do it whether before the recital or before an exam. there were days when class was boring and repetitive but i don't recall a time when i really hated attending unlike piano when there was a time i would even cry a little because that's how bad i didn't want to go.
i haven't seen mrs. leonardo in years. last i heard she was still teaching music. she was always MIA when there were occasions at our school which i attended. i always did look for her. she was someone i longed to talk to again not about anything particular but just ask her how she's been doing. my piano teacher just called a while ago to inform us mrs. leonardo passed away last saturday. i was told she didn't really tell anyone she was sick.
when i heard the news i felt sad. it's just too bad that i haven't been able to see or talk to her recently and now that's no longer possible. she probably doesn't know that i still think of her from time to time. i probably wouldn't have told her this to her face but i consider her one of the best and favorite teachers i've ever had.
rest in peace mrs. leonardo. you won't be forgotten.

i just found out that my favorite club in bangkok not only caught fire during new year's eve festivities, it took almost 60 people with it.
i'm not a regular of any of the clubs here, but i was surely a regular at Santika. during my long month stay in bangkok, i was there on average twice a week. i even went there on the night before my early morning flight out and traveling with a hangover is not something i want to do again. i always go there every time i go to bangkok. even during the time i sprained my ankle and went there the same day i was finally able to walk with out crutches.
it was such a nice place. it's always packed with locals and expats. it had live cover bands and djs. it doesn't require a cover charge or guest list to get in but that doesn't make the place uncool at all. in fact, celebs and models frequent this place too. the service is amazing as well. your server will mix your drink for you no matter how crowded the place is.
the last time i went there was my latest trip to bangkok - may 2007. i was with anielle, my ate ria, and her friends. it was very crowded that night that we couldn't a table. some nice folks offered to share theirs and even treated us.
below is the first news story i found through google. it says 53 people died but my sister said some sources say 59. i don't exactly know why but i'm really sad right now. i only have fond memories of that place and now it has a tragedy forever attached to it.
quote from another source. "Eerily, the sign at the front of the club said "Goodbye Santika 2009" - I thought it was some mistake, but it turns out that the club was indeed being closed down as the owners elected not to renew the lease, and this was the last night."
AM - 53 reported dead in Bangkok nightclub fire
AM - Thursday, 1 January , 2009 08:00:00
Reporter: Barbara Miller
ELEANOR HALL: But we go first to Thailand and the reports of a deadly fire at a nightclub in the heart of the capital, Bangkok.
A police spokesman says that more than 50 people were killed and at least 150 were injured in a fire which broke out after midnight last night in the Santika club.
The club was popular with locals and foreign visitors and was packed with New Year's Eve revellers.
Barbara Miller has our report.
BARBARA MILLER: The fire broke out in the Santika night club near the heart of Bangkok. It's a large and popular venue known for its elaborate stage shows.
Early reports suggested an electrical fault might have caused the fire but eyewitnesses say it broke out during some sort of fireworks display on the stage.
An ABC cameraman in Bangkok, David Leland, spoke to me from outside the Santika, which he says has been totally gutted by the fire.
DAVID LELAND: It's quite surprising how big the fire must have been. It's completely extinguished now but the whole front façade of the concrete structure is, part of it has completely fallen down and the rest of the building has huge cracks in it which tells me there was a really intense fire inside.
From what I'm hearing here on the ground from some eyewitnesses that were in the neighbourhood, not necessarily in the club, people who are coming out were saying that the pyrotechnics on the stage around the midnight hour ignited some materials and it went right up into the second floor because it's all open from the first to the second floor.
BARBARA MILLER: And the Santika, it's quite a large nightclub isn't it?
DAVID LELAND: Yeah, it's one of the most popular sort of high society nightclubs for young people in Bangkok and this was of course one of their biggest parties of the year. And it's quite well known amongst the Thai high-so(phonetic) crowd and even a few foreigners would tend to come and frequent the place too, especially on a night like tonight.
BARBARA MILLER: Would the whole area around the club have been very busy for the New Year celebrations?
DAVID LELAND: It would have, yes. But this club itself is sort of separated from the street. It actually goes into a large parking area. They're off the main road, which means that there wouldn't have been a lot of problems for people getting out actually onto the street or something.
But the main problem I think with this building is that there was no way out from the rear. And from what I'm hearing from one of the rescue guys, they found 30 corpses in one area in the back of the club. There's only one real main entrance-exit and that's the front main door.
And to tell you the truth, it's completely scored with fire damage so it doesn't look like there was any way out.
BARBARA MILLER: Are emergency services still on the scene, police and ambulances?
DAVID LELAND: Yeah. All the bodies have been removed to either hospital or morgue. The rescue workers are still here but forensics have taken over. They've completely encased the whole scene in yellow police tape and they're setting up search lights at the moment. It's not daylight here yet.
I see a lot of furniture that was inside the nightclub that's been hauled out to the front area. A lot of it is broken and covered in blood; so I'm thinking that this was some of the stuff they had to remove out of the front windows to get people out the front because clearly the hallway was not an option.
One of the people I talked to said that, he was from England, he was telling us that basically he was in the bathroom when the fire happened and basically they frantically, he and the people that were in the bathroom tried to cover the door jamb with some wet towels to keep the smoke from coming in but it became so intense they just had to make a dash for it.
BARBARA MILLER: They escaped through a window or back through the door?
DAVID LELAND: I think they'd gone through the window. I think they've gone through the window.
BARBARA MILLER: Photographs taken outside the club in the immediate aftermath of the fire show emergency workers carrying bodies wrapped in white cloths and laying them down in two long rows.
ABC cameraman David Leland says it's not the kind of trouble people were expecting at the New Year.
DAVID LELAND: I think people are a bit shocked here that, you know, in Bangkok tonight people were expecting maybe some trouble on the political front because of the problems that Thailand has been experiencing with the rival factions. But in the end people are just finding that it was this tragic fire that's gone and taken so many young lives of New Year revellers right there on the midnight hour.
BARBARA MILLER: The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it's looking into the matter.
ELEANOR HALL: Barbara Miller reporting.

| Hairspray Manila |
[14 Nov 2008|07:59pm] |
So Inna and I saw Hairspray Manila last night at Star Theater in Star City. I want to write a "review" like I did for Ave Q and WSS but I know a lot of you are still going to watch this (hopefully on Kakki's show - Nov 23 3pm or Daphne's show - Nov 28 8pm) so I rather not. Why? Just because... hehehe ;p (or maybe I'll write one after Nov 28)
Don't get me wrong. It was a good show. Audio was pretty bad though (and we were in front). And woohoo...Blue-reppers REPRESENT!!! hahaha
Most of the performers were really good especially Tracy, Penny, Velma, and Amber (Yeah I know their names, just feel weird using their real ones because I don't know them personally).
I think Nyoy Volante also did great, couldn't hear him too well though. And of course, Dulce. That's like a given. (Using their names is okay coz they're ~celebrities~.)
So in summary, is it worth watching? Yes. Definitely. Especially if you're into musicals.
Why wouldn't I write a review ala Ave Q and WSS? Just message me privately. :D

| Globe woes continue... |
[04 Nov 2008|09:50am] |
|
I don't have a data plan with my iPhone since I didn't have to apply a new line to get it. I was only advised by Globe to switch to the per minute rate from the per kbps downloaded. I thought that turning off 3G and Data Roaming would stop applications from automatically/accidentally connecting to the internet. 90% of the few times I used my iPhone for internet, I was either connected to our wifi at home or the free one at the gym. The 10% (just about 5-8 times since i got it!) I knew i was just paying for 5 pesos for 15 minutes. I am aware that it rounds up (they would charge you the whole 15 minutes even if you just used it for 5) but how the hell could I have allegedly been online for 7 thousand plus minutes or 130 hours?!
I am a bum. I am always at home. I only go out for a couple of hours every other day to go the gym and just the occasional night out with friends on weekends. I have wifi at home. I have a desktop computer and a laptop where I do all my internet. I don't even use my phone when I'm at home.
Apparently even with 3G and Data Roaming off, Edge will still connect you to the internet. Now there are a few times wherein Safari would open accidentally but still, how can those plus my rare usage amount to 130 hours? I am aware that some games and applications will look for a connection but I was vigilant on those.
Globe does not keep tabs on when you used the internet. Just how much of it. So there's really no way to fight this. My iPhone might have connected to the internet with out me knowing and I blame Edge. I also blame Globe. Why? Coz I can.
Now to turn off Edge, make sure you have the latest update from iTunes. Then go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network then delete internet.globe.com.ph beside APN. The E will still show beside your operator logo but if you open safari (and you're not on wifi or 3G and data roaming is off) a notice will pop up that you are not connected to the internet. You have now turned off Edge.
Horatio does not approve.

| Bonfire Apology |
[04 Oct 2008|07:40am] |
For the sake of my non-atenean especially lasallian friends...############################################### Letter of Fr. Nebres, SJ to Bro. Luistro, FSC ###############################################
2 October 2008
BROTHER ARMIN LUISTRO, FSC President De la Salle University System 2401 Taft Avenue Manila
Re: Ateneo Bonfire
Dear Bro. Armin,
I would like to extend my deepest apology to you and to the La Sallian community for what some alumnus or student did at the Ateneo Bonfire, namely, write the names of the La Salle players on the wood. Unfortunately, none of us saw it ahead of time, because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light it.
Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share.
Once again, my deepest apologies to you and to the La Sallian community. We are trying to find out who is responsible for the act.
Sincerely yours,
BIENVENIDO F. NEBRES, SJ President
##################################### Letter of Mr. Paredes to Fr. Nebres #####################################
3 October 2008
Fr. Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ President Ateneo de Manila University
Dear Fr. Nebres,
I write this letter for two reasons. The first one is to own up to producing the materials with the names of the Green Archers and placing them prominently in the woodpile before the bonfire for all to see.
Secondly, I sincerely apologize to you for the queasy situation you are in as a result of the backlash it created.
While the nature of this letter is a personal apology to you, please feel free to extend it to parties you may deem fit to receive it.
Sincerely,
Jesse Paredes HS'54, AB'58
------------------------------------------
I personally was not aware of this until after the controversy came out. My personal opinion is that putting the extra wood with the names was unnecessary. I know of Mr. Paredes even before this controversy. He is a staunch supporter and was always present at basketball games ever since I started watching in high school. It is very hard to miss him because he is always wearing that cap of his with the little eagle on top. He also boycotted games at one point because Ateneo kept on losing.
For the record, most people present at the bonfire were not even aware of the names on the firewood. Obviously, it wasn't in any way officially part of the celebration. If it were the other way around I would be pissed too. It is a shameful incident and I hope it never happens again.
Peace.
OBF!

| Today is... |
[11 Sep 2008|01:12am] |
|
September 11.
In 2001, I was in third year high school. I watched a bit of CNN before going to school and saw the footage of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers on constant loop. When I entered our classroom someone wrote in huge block letters. IN CASE YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK, THE WTC WAS BOMBED (or something to this effect). The rest of the day I don't remember that accurately. I can recall most teachers starting the class saying something about what happened and possible scenarios on what could happen next but it wasn't discussed in length. I didn't grasp the gravity of this incident until much later.
So what do you remember about September 11, 2001?

| Does your heart beat blue? |
[09 Sep 2008|07:36am] |
|
Mine does. Just take a look at this corner in my room. The thing is, I never really bought shirts from A-shop. The only Ateneo shirts I had before were old P.E. shirts. I don't even wear Ateneo shirts to games. Of course I have the 2002 championship shirt and someone gave me the Larry shirt. But, the first Ateneo game shirt I actually bought was last year's Ang Sarap Maging Atenista.
Now, I'm a sucker for the Adidas apparel. Last year, I bought the jacket (which in my opinion is better than the ones that came out this year). This year, I bought the cap since I found everything else too expensive. I couldn't resist for too long though and I bought the jersey. What made me give in is the thought that I might find myself desperately wanting one when the season ends the way the blue and white faithful are hoping it would. In any case, whatever what happens, I have something to wear to the gym. :)
By far, the best unofficial Ateneo shirt this year has to be the "Does your heart beat blue?" shirt. It definitely does not look like your typical silkscreen game shirt. The fabric does not feel cheap and it looks like a graphic tee or a statement shirt. It's not even a screaming Ateneo shirt. You can wear it elsewhere and the only give-away is the small AMDG at the back which most people wouldn't get. Php280 well spent don't you think?
If at this point you still haven't figured out that the purpose of this entry is to shamelessly plug this very cool shirt then allow me to go straight to the point. You can order this shirt from http://heartofblue.multiply.com. A good friend made and are selling these. Jai Reyes and NoyNoy Baclao wore it during the Ateneo-DLSU game and the rest of the team expressed interest in getting them as well. So order yours now while supplies last! :D
College friends getting together despite busy schedules and coincidentally wearing the same color approve of this post!

| i'm not the jinx |
[06 Sep 2008|10:43pm] |
|
krissy and i have this ongoing joke that i shouldn't watch an ateneo game live since the first game i watched this season was the lone loss to feu.
so when i bumped into her the other night at west side story and told her that i was actually watching the big game yesterday, she was, as far as i could tell, at least half serious that she would blame me if ateneo loses. personally, i don't really believe in such things but every little bit helps i guess.
the game wasn't what i expected it to be. a no bearing game and ateneo dominated the entire time. we even got to sing the victory song, which i believe is rare in ateneo-la salle games. i texted krissy right after that i wasn't malas. i believe the ateneo team has what it takes to go all the way. i really hope they do.
after going home to eat (i was starved!) and change, i went to dencio's metrowalk for the planned dinner with bench-mates. it's been a while since we've had a get-together. it turned out that majority of us were actually at the game and so the dinner also became a mini celebration.
krissy didn't reply to my earlier text and so i sent her another one asking if she wasn't going to acknowledge that i'm not the jinx. her reply was, "i'm still in denial."<-- this made me laugh out loud!

caught the opening night of west side story courtesy of minnie fong who hooked me and birhday twin inna up with great seats - 2nd row dead center.
it was looooooong. it ended past 11.but it was great. the lighting was really awesome. normally, i don't really notice the lighting, but it was really good.
the set was good, too. on the low tech side (hi manongs and cast members pushing the set! we can see you you know! hehehe) but it looked nice and expensive.
christian bautista's singing was beyond good. his accent kept changing though hehe.
joanna ampil was of course flawless. i take back saying that she's too old to be maria (to christian bautista's tony of course. though, i want to see karylle. i'm sure she can sing as high but not as powerful. i want to hear how she'd do the songs)
girl that played anita stole the whole show. great singer. great dancer. great actress. and she had the accent down. i'm so sorry i'm too lazy to get your name from the program. i promise i will and will have it memorized and watch every show you're in.
it was nice to see familiar faces in the cast. bluerep-ers represent! hehehe
the choreo was very similar to the movie which was complicated and the cast pulled it off.
the only things that bothered me were the abundance of make-up stains on clothes after the opening dance-fight sequence (that's really uh...manly...) and that the lapels kept on malfunctioning. there were certain scenes wherein the mics were completely off. fortunately we were near the stage so we could still hear but i'm pretty sure those at the back couldn't.
so there. i recommend you watch it. but don't make plans before 11pm. mich, nev, and nikki ended up waiting for us for too long.
i will close this post with my favorite line from tonight's performance, "HE KEEELED YERRRR BRRRAAAAADDDDEEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!!!!"
this post not officially approved by the cast of west side story manila

| Globe can DIAF! |
[20 Aug 2008|09:07am] |
|
I was able to "reserve" an iPhone 3G on the day Globe put up the website where you can do that. I wasn't satisfied with just doing that so I even called the hotline. To make a long story short, I "successfully reserved" a black 16gig model and can get it cheaper and with out a new subscription plan via the loyalty program. The last time Globe called me, the operator advised me that they would be calling this week to finalize delivery/pick-up details.
When I woke up from my nap, my phone registered 4 missed calls from 4 different landline numbers which I was 90% sure were Globe numbers. So I called the hotline and sure enough it was them. Apparently they already called my mom's line (my line is under her name), and got her approval to wait for the 16gig which they can't give a specific date for release. When I talked to my mom, it turns out they tried to convince her to get the 8gig model instead but she said no because she knew I wouldn't settle for that. (The fact that the operator was actually trying to convince her to downgrade is really really fishy!)
I called the hotline again because I wanted to find out why with all the calls from Globe confirming my reservation, a reference number that shows that I was the 1,437th person on whatever list, and a notice that the next call would be regarding delivery/pick-up details now I have to wait an indefinite amount of time before I receive my phone.
I know I shouldn't vent out my anger on the poor operator but I had to let her know that I wouldn't be taking any bull from her and so after several minutes of showing her that she can't distract me with her flowery statements I got her to basically admit the following:
1. The reference number means squat. (What the hell was the reservation for then?!) 2. My getting the phone via the loyalty program was a factor on why I'm not getting it on the 24th (2 days after the release) as earlier told. (Loyalty reward my ass!) 3. The powers that be in charge of the loyalty program decide who to release the phone to and when (even after being approved). (Red tape always leads to a form of corruption y/y?)
These lead me to the conclusion that Globe doesn't give a flying fuck to its "loyal" subscribers and would screw them over to make more money entertaining new subscribers of the ridiculously expensive iPhone plans.

| Pic Post: Singapore Day 11 |
[29 Mar 2008|08:36am] |
a.k.a. Ikea Day. Didn't really buy anything for myself. Mostly went there for ideas for my new room. I'm just gonna get someone to build the cabinets and shelves for me. It's cheaper that way I think.
Today I also went to visit my former Summit School students. Reggie, Oli, and Alex. Reggie's so big now. He's almost as tall as Oli. Alex is reading now. It was really nice seeing those three again. Hope I see my other students again, too.
My flight is later at 12:40am. We're going to the airport early though. We're still going to line up for the Tourist refund. I hope my baggage is within the limit. It was already 20 kilos when I arrived. LOL. Honestly, I kinda want to say here a bit longer but oh well. I'm coming back. I swear. hehehe
Pray with me for a safe and comfy flight. See you guys soon!

Met up with Ate Ria at Citilink Mall. From there we walked past the Esplanade Theater to the Merlion for the mandatory tourist pic.
Then back to Esplanade for the opening night of We Will Rock You (Singapore). I know i've been ranting about WWRY way too much but I just feel so lucky to catch it here, on opening night nonetheless, coz I didn't even know about it until a few days ago when people where handing out fliers at the Maroon 5 concert.
After the show, my sister and I rushed to Clarke Quay to grab a late dinner at Cafe Iguana (and of course we had the Mucho Margarita, too).
We're going to Ikea later, after, I will t ry to see my former students who are here, then I'm going to airport and go home back to Manila.
Actually a part of me still doesn't want to go home...oh well i can always come back! =)

I just have to brag that I was lucky enough to book decent tickets online for the OPENING NIGHT of We Will Rock You here in Singapore starring INXS 'reject' Migs Ayesa.
In case you don't know Mamma Mia is to Abba (Broadway) as We Will Rock You is to Queen (West End).
It is hands down the most enjoyable play I've been to. The story was okay until the ending which was just a blur. But it's just like being in a rock concert. Strobe lights, fog machines, the ridiculous outfits. It was great. The band..wow....wow.. guitar solos and all.
Plus, audience participation was encouraged and not awkward for once. Everyone in the audience clapped and cheered "We will...We will... ROCK YOU!!!" and they had us sing the chorus of "We are the champions..."
Super LSS until now. Can anybody find meeeee? Somebody toooooo loooooooveeeee.....

Maroon 5 in SINGAPORE!
Great seats thanks to the fact that tickets were bought last December and Micah decided not to watch so I got her ticket.

First song was Harder To Breathe which is one of my faves. Last song during the two-song encore was She Will Be Loved.
After the concert, we were waiting for other people unwittingly in the back where the band was going to go out so we caught them before boarding their shuttle. Adam Levine and Jesse Carmichael just waved at our area (just got pictures of their backs) but James Valentine actually approached us and signed a few autographs (such a nice guy).
Up next for me: West-End Musical "We Will Rock You" on Friday starring Migs Ayesa.
This is turning out to be such a "cultural" trip.
